Microsoft Office for Students and Employees

All New River students and employees are given free access to Microsoft Office 365 cloud apps automatically.

If a student or employee needs access to the downloaded desktop apps for installation on personal computers (PC and Mac only, Chromebooks are not eligible) here are the steps.

**If you are taking an Office Application class, you must use the installed version of Office and not the Cloud Versions.

If you try to use the cloud apps it will cause issues with doing the assignments and turning them in on time.

**In order to download and install the full version of office you have to have an A3 license applied to your account. Contact the help desk and let us know that you need a license so we can apply it.

**If you don't have an A3 license you will not have the option to download the software.

Logging into Microsoft Office 365 (through the portal)

To access the Microsoft Office 365 applications, you must first login to the New River portal (https://newriver.onbio-key.com).  Here are the steps:

  1. Login to the New River portal (https://newriver.onbio-key.com).
  2. Click the Office 365 Email link.

  1. Click on the waffle located at the top left of your screen.

  1. Click on Microsoft 365.

  1. On the next screen, you may have to choose an option for Microsoft Copilot. This is up to you and is not required.

  1. Click on the dropdown box that says “Install and More” on the Right side of the screen. Then Click "Install Microsoft 365 Apps"
  2. On the next page click on "Apps and devices" if the page doesn’t  start there. Then click the button that says “Install Office”

  1. After you click on the “Install Office” button a download will start in the top right of your browser. Once it finishes click on the downloaded installer.
  2. When you click on it you may get a pop up that asks if you want to allow this software to make changes to your computer. Click Yes / Continue.
  3. It will take some time for the install to finish. Once it does you can locate your office applications in the start menu of windows listed by the application name Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.

It’s very important you UNCHECK the "Allow my organization to manage my device" checkbox if you see that option during installation or after you sign in.

11. Find Excel in the start menu and click it to open it. Accept the license agreement and then Click on “Sign in” or your initials up in the top left of the screen.

12.  Sign in with your New River email address. If you are signed in with a personal account you will not have the license required to use the full version of office.

If you are signed in with a personal email address (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook etc.) you will need to click sign out and then sign back in with your New River email.

Do not use the app called Microsoft 365 / Office 365 in the start menu if you are trying to use the full version of Office. These are links that will open the Cloud version which do not have full functionality.

About Downloading Microsoft Office 365 Apps

After you click the "Install Office" link, the site will determine the version best suited for your computer and it will download. Alternatively, you can click the drop-down icon beside this button to "View other install options" and see what other options are available.

If downloading the apps doesn't work, it may be due to limited space on your hard drive or that you're using a Chromebook or other non-supported device.  If so, you can still use the Office applications online from your Office 365 account. When you're viewing your Office 365 Email screen, you'll find links for all the Office 365 apps.  Simply click one to get started using the web version of that app.
